The Man Who Didn’t Want Saving

The night air was soaked in rain. It fell in sheets against the hospital windows, drumming like impatient fingers on glass. The corridors of St. Mary’s Medical College Hospital hummed with the usual mix of exhaustion and adrenaline—nurses on night duty, interns trying to stay awake with cups of bitter coffee, the occasional groan of a patient echoing from a ward, and the never-ending chaos that kept the building alive while the rest of the town slept.

Bhavna adjusted her stethoscope around her neck as she signed the last file of her shift. Her eyes stung, her damp hair clung to her temples, and every muscle screamed for rest. She had been on her feet for thirty-six straight hours, running from ward to ward, patient to patient, balancing paperwork with emergencies. The fluorescent lights above buzzed faintly, a cruel reminder that even night in a hospital never really looked like night.
